More ways to give

Giving through stocks and mutual funds can have a special tax advantage. When you donate stocks or mutual funds, you receive a charitable deduction equivalent to the fair market value of the stock/mutual fund on the date that you make the donation. Additionally, you are not subject to paying federal and state income tax on the appreciated portion of the current, fair market value of the stocks and mutual funds. Here are three important notes:

• To avoid potential income tax, you are required to transfer stocks or mutual funds directly to The Crossing, rather than selling them yourself. The Crossing’s brokerage account will handle the liquidation of the gift.
• It is much more advantageous to donate stocks and mutual funds that you’ve held for more than one year, because they are a charitable donation at their fair market value, at the time of donation. However, donated stocks and mutuals funds held for one year or less only receive a charitable donation equivalent to the cost basis, not the fair market value at the time of donation.
• Please notify us if you are planning on donating stock or mutual funds, so we can process it as soon as we receive it and ensure you receive credit for the gift. Let us know you are making a transfer by any of the below three options:

   2. Completing this online form
   3. Downloading, completing, and mailing this form to The Crossing.

Once the church liquidates the asset, we will send you a letter that acknowledges the gift and provides the date it was received. In the letter, we will also list information about the value of the stock or mutual fund on the day we received the gift. If you are age 70 ½ or older, you can give pre-tax funds from your IRA to The Crossing. Such gifts can reduce your taxable income, even if you take the standard deduction.

If you are at an age where you have required minimum distributions from your IRA, your pre-tax gifts from your IRA to The Crossing can count toward meeting your IRA (RMD) requirement for the year in which they are made.

How to make a Qualified Charitable Distribution:

1. Contact your IRA custodian or financial advisor to ask them to issue a QCD from your IRA to The Crossing.

2. Notify us of the gift by emailing your name and the name of your custodian/advisor to give@thecrossingchurch.com. This allows The Crossing to match and designate your gift accordingly, as not all names are printed on the received check.

3. Your custodian or advisor will send a check to The Crossing on your behalf

You can give other non-cash assets such as real estate, business interests, or farm products by first donating them to a DAF. Your DAF will in turn gift the proceeds to The Crossing.
